Meet Soraya and NadyneNadyne and Soraya met at a dinner party. It was friendship instantly. Soraya, in her native dress and Nadyne in her cowboy boots and jeans. Soraya, a Muslim from Sri Lanka. Nadyne, a Christian from the suburbs in Michigan. Both ladies furthering their professional education, Soraya, an attorney pursuing her master’s degree, Nadyne, a struggling business woman going for a secondary teacher’s certificate, and both ladies dreaming of being a mom.
In that first conversation, their similarities and differences revealed themselves and now 12 years later they are celebrating all the experiences and stories that bring them together. Married and now Moms, both of them.
In a sense, two worlds collided. Across the oceans and religious backgrounds, bridging the gaps past skin color and cultural experience, Nadyne and Soraya developed a bond that has proven to be unbreakable. Their message of love and peace working through vast differences and faith expressions has truly been a light to the world in which they live. Their efforts are remarkable as they engage the tough questions, have the difficult conversations, and love each other no matter what seeks to divide them! What if this were exactly what Jesus intended when he said, “love each other as I have loved you.”
They each finished school and moved on with their dreams. Time and distance separated them, but their hearts continued to beat together committed to work through the challenges for the joy of lasting friendship.
Today, Soraya, a sought after conference speaker, business coach, and wife and mother of two living in Los Angeles and Nadyne, a teacher, living in West Michigan and wife and mother of one… these two ladies have a story to tell to all of us about how we can live in a way that promotes peace - in our homes, in our communities, and wherever we are. Peace is possible.
It starts with a handshake and it’s up to us from there.
